Every June, we recognize Men’s Health Month – a time to raise awareness on health and promote healthy lifestyles. This month serves as a reminder to prioritize physical, mental, and emotional well-being. We encourage men to take proactive steps toward better health and reach out for medical care when needed.
Men’s Health Month is focused on taking charge of their well-being by focusing on these key areas:
- Heart Health – heart disease is the leading cause of death among men. Take measures by visiting your primary care provider, completing regular blood pressure checks, cholesterol screenings, healthy diet, and physical activity. Learn more today at https://www.cdc.gov/heart-disease/about/men-and-heart-disease.html.
- Prostate and Testicular Health – regular check-ups and screenings are recommended starting around age 50, or earlier if there is family history. Talk to your provider about any unusual symptoms such as pain, swelling, or changes in urination. Prioritizing these checks is a step toward long-term health and well-being.
- Mental Health – men can be reluctant to seek help for depression, anxiety, or stress. You are not alone. Prioritize your mental wellness today and visit https://adaa.org/find-help/by-demographics/mens-mental-health.
- Physical Activity – the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week.
- Nutrition – A focus on whole grains, lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats is recommended, while limiting saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and excessive salt intake. Learn more about men’s nutrition at https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/Mens-nutrition-needs.
Whether it’s scheduling a physical, starting your fitness journey, measuring your nutrition, or speaking to someone about your mental health, small steps can make a huge difference. Let’s change the narrative and focus on Men’s Health all year round.
