Sun Safety: Protecting yourself from UV Rays

Sun Safety: Protecting yourself from UV Rays

With the warming temperatures of summer and the extended daylight you might find yourself spending more time outside. Which means it is also a time to prioritize your skin and eyes from the possible harmful effects of the sun. Whether you are going to the beach, enjoying an outdoor picnic, or hiking a local trail, the suns UV rays can do lasting damage. Taking the proper steps for sun safety can reduce your risk of skin cancer, prevent aging, and protect your vision.

Here are some easy  tips to stay healthy and protected this summer:

  1. Know the UV Index – check the UV index on weather apps or your local news before going outdoors. Limit outdoor activity from 10 am- 4pm when possible.
  2. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, at least 30 SPF each day. Make sure to cover often-missed areas including ears, neck, tops of feet, and back of your hands.
  3. Protect your eyes – wear UV-blocking sunglasses to shield your eyes from direct sunlight. Look for labels on sunglasses with 100% UVA/UVB protection.
  4. Wear the right clothing – choose light-colored, loose-fitting clothes, wide brimmed hats, and UPF related fabrics for extra shielding.
  5. Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water, especially if you are outside. Avoid drinking sugary or alcoholic drinks as they can dehydrate you faster.

July is a great time to soak in the sunshine and enjoy summer activities. By knowing the UV Index, using sunscreen, protecting your eyes, wearing the right clothing, and staying hydrated – you can enjoy the summer and keep your skin healthy. Make sun safety a daily habit, not a seasonal one.
